The Hong Kong missionaries were the first to leave San Francisco. Just before departing, Hosea received word that Louisa had given birth to a son and was doing well. The vision of his little family sustained him on the voyage. On April 23, 1853, as the ship lay becalmed in the Pacific, he imagined it resting “like a smiling infant in her sleeping mother’s arms.” The blue of the water met the blue of the sky as he conjured up comforting scenes of home:

Now my wife & my little ones, dance playfully before my imagination. Now the scenes of home reveal themselves. Now the saints in peaceful Utah roll by, busy in their different avocations. Now their fervent prayers ascend on high in my behalf…while the wicked howl and prepare themselves for the doom which awaits them.
